You notice your teenager seems to be very moody, moodier than usual. They seem to be isolating from their friends, sleeping all the time, not eating, and losing interest in the things that use to excite them. They talk about being worthless and guilty when they choose to talk at all. School performance drops, they have difficulty concentrating and may even be expressing thoughts of death and suicide.

The coming out process for a GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender) adolescent can be a challenging moment for not only the teenager, but also their family and friends. It is a time of high emotions that can run the gamut from confusion, shock, disbelief, rejection, and anger, to acceptance, calmness, understanding, and concern. It is important at this potentially fragile time for parents and teens to be kind to each other and create room for this new information and identity to be processed.

As a parent, how do you know when your teen may be in need of therapy? It can be a tough call figuring out what is just normal kid stuff and what is a more serious issue that will benefit from working with a professional who specializes in working with teen depression, adolescent anxiety, and school performance issues.

You know when you have a bad day and it seems like nothing is going right.  Well teenagers have days just like that as well.  Sometimes it is easy as a parent to get lost in the fantasy of our lost youth.  But being a kid is tough.

Adolescent Therapy is a unique process and it is very important to realize that one is not just working with miniature adults. Teenagers are at a unique stage in their development where they are discovering who they are and how they want to be in the world. Their wants and needs may change from day to day as they try on new beliefs and ways of being leaving parents feeling off balance and confused. Supporting teenagers during this period of exploration is a vital part of their growth process and therapy can be an effective tool to support this process when it gets overwhelming for the family.
