Two years of graduate school, traineeship, internship, 3000 client hours, and the test.  This is the universal path of a pre-licensee.  From the time we set forth down this path by entering graduate school, we are bombarded with the task of absorbing and synthesizing huge amounts of information. We are introduced to a plethora of therapeutic models, diagnostic techniques, legal and ethical regulations and historical references.

Car horns blaring; airplanes roaring overhead; radios and televisions constantly chattering and snarling; this chaotic cacophony is the soundtrack to the urban landscape we inhabit. It seems impossible to escape the relentless barrage of external stimuli that hum like static just below our perception, demanding our attention whether we are conscious of it or not.

Neutralizing Negative Emotions for a Healthier Outlook

A recent experience reminded me of the power of yoga’s lessons when we apply them to challenges in our daily lives. I was on my way to the store, going over my grocery list in my mind as I drove. As I pulled into the busy parking lot, I saw a space and pulled in to park. I opened my car door and a man started barking obscenities, ranting furiously that I had taken his parking space.

Women’s bodies are sensuous, miraculous bringers of life. Yet a vast number of women harbor feelings of displeasure or even shame about their bodies, maintaining a judgmental internal dialogue of failure and disappointment over their perceived body images. For many women, looking in the mirror exposes a series of self-manifested flaws for which clothing becomes a tool used to remove the embarrassment of any perceived imperfection. What is the root of this overwhelming presence of self-judgment and displeasure?
